1-05 First-Year Boy
I was studying at Osabe Elementary School on the 11th March. Suddenly, the earthquake started and we went outside. There was a crack in the school yard. I was surprised because it was so big you could put your hand in it. A few minutes later, a family member came to pick me up. We drove home. When I looked at the ocean from in front of my house, I could already clearly see the seabed. It was black. I was thinking that it was strange, and then the tsunami came and the houses in front of our house started to creak and crack while they were swept away.
About five minutes later, another dark wave came and it almost reached our house, so we went up to higher ground, eventually walking up to Osabe Nursery School. People were gathering in what looked like the gym, some warming themselves up with blankets or near a heater. We stayed there for three days and then we went home. When we got home, there was debris of neighboring houses all around our house. At night, we stayed with relatives who had a generator at their house since we didn't have any electricity, and I slept the night.
On the following day, my friend and his family came over to my relatives' place, and we stayed there together. There was no bath, so my relative made a makiburo [1] and we were all able to bathe. Another friend of mine and his family evacuated to the house next door.
A few days later we went to look for my relative's construction materials. He's a carpenter and the materials he uses were washed away in the tsunami. Then we helped clear debris and went to look for things from our house which were washed away by the tsunami. Our house wasn't washed away by the tsunami, but the houses around ours was, so we helped our neighbors look for their possessions.
A few months later, the electricity finally came back on. When we turned on the TV, the disaster of March 11th was being shown and we realized how serious it was. The aftershocks continued and we went up to higher land when they did.
Later, I visited Nagano with my relatives and experienced an earthquake then too. But there is no ocean in Nagano so no tsunami, and we went shopping for things my family and my relatives needed. Back at home, sometimes I cleared the debris from around our house and sometimes I played in front of the house.
A few days later, the water finally came back on too, so I was able to wash my shoes. In summer, I went to a river with my relatives and we went fishing and collected insects. Now I've started junior high school. I go to school by school bus. I study hard and at home I play with my friends.
1. A wood-fire heated bath

ぼくは、三月十一日に長部小学校で勉強をしていました。とつぜん地震がきてぼくたちは、外に出ました。そしたら校庭の庭の土にひびがはいっていました。もう土が取れるようなひびでびっくりしました。それからなん分かして家の人がむかえにきました。それから車に乗って家に帰りました。家の前で海を見たら、もう海のそこがはっきり見えました。黒くてへんなかんじに思っていたら津波がきて前にあった家が、流されながらばきばきと音が鳴っていました。それから五分くらいたってからまた黒っぽい波がきて、その波が家の前まできたので、みんなで高いところにいって長部ほいくしょまで歩いて行きました。そこにある体育館ぽいホールでみんながあつまってふとんなどをかぶったりストーブの近くにいた人もいました。そこで三日くらいとまってから自分の家に帰りました。帰ったら家のまわりに人の家のがれきがありました。夜は、電気がなかったのでしんせきの人の家ではつ電気をおこして夜はねました。
それから次の日、友達の家の人もそのしんせきの人の家にきていっしょにいました。おふろがなかったのでしんせきの人がまきぶろを作ってみんなおふろにはいりました。隣の家には、別の友達の家の人がひなんしてきて、なん日かたってそのしんせきの人が大工さんなのでその人の使うざいりょうが流されたのでその流されたざいりょうなどを拾いにいきました。それからがれきのかたづけや、自分の家の物で流れた物を拾いにいったりしました。ぼくの家は津波で流されなかったけどまわりの人の家は、流されたのでその家の人の物とかをみんなで拾ってあげたりしました。それからなんか月後に電気がつきました。それでテレビを見たら三月十一日の東日本大震災のえいぞうが映っていてみんなあんな津波だったんだといっていました。それからよしんがつづいてみんなで高いところににげたりしていました。それからぼくは、しんせきの人と長野県にいってそのときも、地震がありました。でも長野は、海はなくて津波もこなかったのでぼくの家やしんせきの人の家でひつような物を買っていきました。それで家に帰ってからがれきをかたづけたり家の前で遊んだりしていました。それからなん日かたって、こんどは水がでるようになったので自分で自分のくつを洗ったりしていました。それから夏になったので、しんせきの人と川にいって魚を取ったり虫をつかまえたりしました。それから中学校生活がはじまってスクールバスでかよっていて、勉強をして家では、友達の家などで遊びました。
