2-13 Second-Year Boy
At the time of the huge earthquake on March 11, for some reason I didn't feel anything. An 18-meter high tsunami came, and I couldn't do anything at all, just watch.
After a while, when I looked at the town, there was nothing left. The Kesen Junior High School building, where we had studied together, was gone and it was tough not being able to go to that school ever again. While I was at home, I always wondered what we’d do about school. I worried more and more if everyone was okay. There were a lot of aftershocks and they kept coming fast without any breaks, so I was always nervous.
It’s not like only bad stuff happened. Sometimes things made me happy. Thanks to meals provided for us every day, we could eat. After about a month, the electricity came on and I was so happy. We were all so happy when we had electricity again. I will never forget that moment.
Finally school restarted. At first, there were times it stank outside on the way to school. But being able to go to school made me really happy and I really looked forward to it. I became student body vice-president and we had to prepare for different events. Being active in front of all of the students was hard but it felt very rewarding.
There was something I really worked hard on this year. It was English. Ever since first year, English has been my worst subject so I really studied hard. Since I tried hard, I was able to get my highest score ever in English. If you work hard, someday you will definitely see the results, so I want to continue to work hard to get into Ofunato High School.

三月十一日の大震災その時なぜか何も感じなかった。十八メートルの波が来ても、何もできず、ただ見ているしかできなかった。
しばらくして、町を見た時には、何も残っていませんでした。みんなで過ごした気仙中校舎が無くなり、もうあの学校に行くことができないのが辛かった。「学校はどうするのかな。」とずっと家にいた時思っていました。みんな元気かな心配なことばかり増えていきました。余震も多く時間をおかず、すぐに来るのでいつもビクビクしながら過ごしていました。
でもいやなことだけが起きるわけではなく嬉しかったこともありました。毎日支援してくれた食事のおかげで食べることができました。一ヶ月後には電気もついて本当にうれしかったです。電気がついたときはみんなでよろこびました。あのときのことは忘れられません。
ついに学校も再開しました。最初は通学中外がくさいときもありました。でも学校に行けるようになって本当にうれしかったし、とても楽しみでした。
生徒会副会長にもなり、いろいろな行事に向けての準備をするようになりました。みんなの先頭に立って活動するのは大変ではありますがとてもやりがいを感じています。
この一年でがんばったこともあります。英語です。英語は1年生のときからのニガテ科目だったのでがんばって勉強をしました。そのがんばりで自己最高得点をとることができました。ど力すれば必ずいつか自分のためになるから、これからもど力を続けて行って大船渡高校に入れるようがんばりたいです。
