That Unforgettable Day
It was sudden. I felt a large tremor at 2:46 PM. I froze standing as the earthquake continued. The teacher yelled for us to evacuate and we fled, still wearing our slippers. When we ran outside, there was a crack in the ground. A tsunami warning was being broadcast. I thought the approaching tsunami would probably be huge. We went to our usual evacuation site at the old museum and when we looked at the ocean, the tide had receded so far. Then the teacher told us to climb higher, so we all did. A few minutes later, the tsunami came. At first, I didn’t think it was the tsunami, but as I watched the pine trees of Matsubara [1] being knocked over, I realized it was the tsunami.
After that, we took shelter in the forest. We could still hear the sounds of the tsunami from within the forest. Later, we left the forest and went to Futsukaichi Community Center. That night we ate onigiri [2] and soba [3] noodles. The food was gathered and prepared for us by residents of Futsukaichi. I slept for about two hours afterwards. It was pretty hard to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up around 5 AM. My friend’s father came to take the junior high school students from Koya back and we went along, but there was fear of another tsunami so we returned to the community center. Around 10, my relative and friend’s father came to get us. We caught a ride to Sugoroku. Then we went to the community center in Koya. My grandmother, grandfather, and little sister were all there. I felt relieved. That evening, my dad joined us there. I felt relieved again.
I want to thank the people who helped me survive so I want to be stronger in my life from now on.

記憶に残るあの日
あれは突然だった。二時四十六分、大きな揺れを感じた。じっと立っていたら、まだ揺れていて先生に「逃げろ」と言われて上靴のまま逃げた。外へ逃げていたら地面にひびが入っていた。大津波警報の放送が流れていた。これは何かものすごい津波が来そうだと思った。いつもの避難場所の元博物館に逃げて海を見ていたら、ものすごく潮が引いていた。その後、先生が「もっと上に上がれ」と言ったのでみんな上に上がった。何分か後に津波が来た。最初は津波だとあんまり思わなかったけど、だんだんと松原の松の木が倒されていくのを見て、津波だと思った。
その後は森の中に避難しました。森の中でも津波の音が聞こえていました。その後、森から出て二日市公民館に行きました。その夜はおにぎりとそばを食べました。二日市の人たちが集まって作ってくださった食べ物です。その後二時間ほど寝ました。なかなか眠れませんでした。
次の朝、5時くらいに起きました。友達のお父さんが古谷の中学生を引き取りに来ていっしょに向かいましたが、津波の恐れがあったので僕達は戻りました。十時過ぎに本家の人とその友達のお父さんに迎えに来ました。双六で車に乗せてもらいました。それから古谷公民館に向かいました。祖父と祖母と妹がそこにいました。安心しました。夕方父も公民館にきました。また安心しました。
僕は命を助けてもらってありがたいと思いました。だから、これからたくましく生きていこうと思います。
